AJC Battery works with a large range of companies and it’s always interesting to learn more about them. One industry that surprised us not only with their need of SLA replacement batteries but also how many of them there are, is the telecom industry. While we may be familiar with some of the bigger names in the industry and we do supply replacement batteries for them, there are a number of smaller companies that will often piggyback off the larger companies to serve consumers or businesses. The larger companies will also often outsource their services to these smaller telecom companies.
Through the years, telecom companies have had to shift their technology to embrace new ones but many still require backup batteries for their UPS devices or base transceiver stations but newer devices like Optical Network Terminals (ONT) are increasingly important. While they may seem like a small part of the company requirements, they are obviously very critical components. Power outages are a great fear of telecom companies so how they handle these can reflect positively or negatively with consumers and businesses. Let’s have a look at what some of those critical components may be.
Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS) Devices – these are by far the greatest requirement for telecom companies as they rely not only on office computers and systems to keep operating but they typically have a lot of server racks throughout their operations. Server downtime can be critical so making sure there are backups and redundancies throughout their system is essential.
Emergency Power Supply (EPS) – keep some essential things working when the power goes out. Emergency Lights and exit signs are important examples of this but also things like elevators and transmitters.
Alarms – many telecom companies manage home alarm systems and most use SLA batteries for backup purposes.
“We have a lot of moving parts in our industry so being able to cover many of them through one company is beneficial. We’ve trusted BatteryClerk and AJC for several years and both bottom line and performance has been markedly improved”
Sealed Lead Acid batteries are the most popular option for telecom as they have enough power to support the massive telecom loads required plus relatively small operating costs. Their low maintenance requirement lends itself well to supporting companies who have staff doing multiple tasks at time. Some devices have specific size requirements as well so finding the right match is important.
Lithium-Ion Batteries are also used throughout the telecom industry specifically where size (or weight in particular) is a factor so things like cell phone relay stations and Cable TV terminals require the Li-ion replacement battery.
The BatteryClerk telecom clients certainly seem to be busy these days and given our continued increased reliance on their services, we are more than happy to help in any small way to preventing any significant outages. It’s good to know that our batteries are providing such a critical service.
