Buying a Replacement Snowblower Battery
Last updated: October 2026
Gas snowblowers that start with a key or button and no extension cord run on a 12V sealed lead acid starting battery. In AJC®'s snowblower line that battery comes in one of two sizes: a BCI group U1 AGM battery rated at 300 cold cranking amps (CCA) for larger machines, or a compact 12V 7 to 9Ah AGM battery with spade terminals. To choose a replacement, match the voltage, the size, the terminal layout and the CCA rating printed on your old battery. This guide explains how to tell the two sizes apart, what the numbers on the label mean, and how to keep a snowblower battery healthy from first snowfall to spring storage.
Shop AJC® lawn, garden and snowblower batteries or use the size table below.
Which Snowblowers Use a 12V Battery?
Not every snowblower has one. Most gas models with "electric start" use a 120V starter that plugs into a household outlet, so they have no battery at all; the Cub Cadet 3X series and Toro Power Max HD work this way. A 12V battery is used on machines with DC electric start, such as Honda's HSS928A and HSS1332A ATD and AWD models, and on some Ariens and Gravely snowblowers. Cordless electric snowblowers use 40V to 82V lithium-ion tool packs instead, which AJC® does not make.
If you start your machine with a key and no cord, look for the battery under a cover near the engine or control panel and read its label.
U1 or Compact AGM: Which Size Does Your Snowblower Take?
The two sizes look nothing alike, so a quick look at the old battery settles it.

Don't see your model? The same U1 battery is sold as the generic AJC® U1 and AJC® U1R, and compact 12V AGM batteries are in the sealed lead acid collection.
General Search - type in "Snowblower battery" and see what comes up.

Product-Based Search - Search by the product model (in our case Ariens Pro 1336)

Model-based Search - many batteries will have an ID number listed somewhere on the casing. Put that into the search and see if there's a match (in this case CS-KBT254PW, the electric powered combination tool)

How Do You Read a Snowblower Battery Label?
Check these four things on the old battery before you order.
Voltage
Snowblower starting batteries are 12V. Some Ariens models with electronic fuel injection also carry a separate 7.2V EFI battery; that is a different part and not interchangeable with a 12V starting battery.
Cold cranking amps (CCA) or amp-hours (Ah)
CCA is the current a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 0°F while holding at least 7.2V. It is the number that matters most for a snowblower, because the machine only runs when it's cold. Match or exceed the original CCA. Compact AGM batteries are usually rated in amp-hours instead; a higher-Ah battery of the same size, such as 9Ah in place of 7Ah, stores more energy and is a safe upgrade if it fits.
Terminal type and layout
U1 batteries use bolt-on posts. The "R" in U1R means the positive and negative terminals are in reversed positions; buying the wrong one can leave the cables too short to reach. Compact batteries use spade terminals: F1 tabs are 0.187 in wide and F2 tabs are 0.250 in wide. Match what your cables are made for.
Size
The battery has to fit the tray and hold-down. A U1 measures about 7.76 x 5.12 x 6.7 in; the compact size measures about 5.94 x 2.56 x 3.7 in.
Why Choose an AGM Battery for a Snowblower?
AJC® snowblower batteries are absorbed glass mat (AGM) sealed lead acid batteries. For a machine that vibrates hard and lives in a cold garage, that construction has practical advantages:
- Sealed and spill-proof. The electrolyte is held in glass mat separators, so there is no free acid to slosh or leak and no water to top up.
- Vibration resistant. Tightly packed plates handle the shaking of an auger and impeller better than a loose flooded cell.
- Ready to install. AJC® batteries ship sealed and charged.
- Tested to a standard. The compact 12V AJC® batteries are listed as UL Recognized Components.
How Does Cold Affect a Snowblower Battery?
A lead acid battery delivers less cranking power as it gets colder, and it also becomes vulnerable to freezing when it is low. Interstate Batteries says a fully charged battery won't freeze until about -76°F, while a fully discharged one can freeze at around 32°F. Battery University gives about -67°F charged and about 5°F discharged. A frozen battery can crack its case and plates, and it should never be charged; replace it. The simplest protection is to keep the battery fully charged all winter.
How Do You Replace a Snowblower Battery?
What you need: the replacement battery, a wrench or screwdriver, and safety glasses.
- Turn the engine off and remove the key. Let the engine cool before you start.
- Remove the battery cover and photograph the wiring. Red goes to positive (+), black to negative (−).
- Disconnect the black (negative) cable first, then the red (positive) cable. Don't let a tool touch both terminals or the frame at once.
- Release the hold-down and lift the old battery out.
- Install the new battery and secure the hold-down. Confirm the terminal layout matches before you tighten anything.
- Connect the red (positive) cable first, then the black (negative) cable, and test. Tighten both terminals, refit the covers, and start the engine.
How Should You Store a Snowblower Battery Over the Summer?
Most snowblower batteries fail from neglect in the off-season, not from use. A battery that sits partly discharged from March to November sulfates and loses capacity it won't get back.
- Charge it fully before storage. Honda recommends an automatic charger at 2 amps or less for its HSS batteries.
- Remove it and store it cool and dry. Honda advises removing the battery for long storage.
- Recharge on a schedule. Honda recommends recharging every 6 months or when voltage drops to 12.9V. Battery University advises recharging any lead acid battery that falls to about 70% charge, roughly 12.4V. A float maintainer keeps it topped up automatically.
- Check it before the first storm. A charged 12V battery should read about 12.6V or higher. Charge it in October, not on the morning you need it.
- Turn the key off. Honda notes that leaving the engine switch on with the engine off will drain the battery.

What Should You Do With the Old Battery?
Lead batteries are the most recycled consumer product in the United States, with a recycling rate of about 99% according to Battery Council International. Take the old battery to a battery retailer, auto parts store or local recycling center, or mail SLA and AGM batteries to us through our battery recycling program.
Buying Snowblower Batteries for a Shop or Fleet?
Small engine repair shops, outdoor power equipment dealers and property maintenance crews replace a lot of U1 batteries between November and February. Stocking up before the first storm avoids rush shipping and empty shelves. Our wholesale program offers volume pricing, Net 30 terms and purchase orders.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a snowblower battery the same as a lawn tractor battery?
Often, yes. Many riding mowers and lawn tractors use the same BCI group U1 size as larger snowblowers, so one battery may fit both. Match the CCA rating and the terminal layout (U1 or U1R) rather than the type of equipment.
What is the difference between a U1 and a U1R battery?
They are the same size and rating. The "R" means the positive and negative terminals are reversed. Choose the layout that lets your snowblower's cables reach the correct terminals.
Can I use a higher-CCA or higher-Ah battery in my snowblower?
Yes, as long as it is 12V, fits the tray and has the same terminal layout. Extra cranking amps or capacity give you more margin on cold starts. A lower rating than the original is not recommended.
Can I charge a snowblower battery in a cold garage?
Yes, a lead acid battery can be charged in the cold, though it charges more slowly. Never charge a battery that may be frozen; bring it inside to warm up and inspect the case first.
Do AJC® batteries fit Honda snowblowers?
Honda HSS ATD and AWD models use a 12V battery, but battery size varies by model. Check the label on the old battery or your owner's manual for the group size and terminal layout, then match it, or call us with the Honda part number.
